The Bayu-Undan gas condensate field was discovered by the drilling of the Bayu-1 well in January 1995 and the Undan-1 well in July 1995. The field measures 25 X 12 km and is in Jurassic sandstones, 50 to 150 metres thick.
The initial gas in place of the field is estimated about 8 trillion cubic feet, including hydrocarbon liquids in place, of 930 MMstb. Production started in February 2004 using eight production wells and four gas injection wells.
The gas produced is described as ‘wet’ or ‘raw’. The off-shore process facilities stabilises the condensate (light oil). The associated gas from this process is cooled, chilled and compressed to produce propane and butane. All three products are then pumped to the Floating Storage and Off-loading (FSO) facility, the Liberdade for storage, prior to export by tanker. The ‘dry’ gas is then exported via pipeline to Darwin. It is then chilled and converted into liquefied natural gas (LNG) and exported to Japan. The first export of LNG from the Darwin LNG plant was shipped in February 2006. Excess ‘dry’ gas, not piped to Darwin, is reinjected into the reservoir where it ‘sweeps’ more fluids from the reservoir rocks.
The current daily average production of liquids from the Bayu-Undan field is approximately 111,000 barrels with the figure for gas being approximately 1,070 million cubic feet.
Bayu-Undan is regarded as a major and world class gas-condensate field which can be expected to continue production for 25 to 30 years.
